Mexicans and former world champions Carlos “Medicine Man” Cuadras and Pedro “Jibran” Pedrin will fly around the world to Tashkent, Uzbekistan to fight for the WBC Interim super flyweight title, as the crowning event of the World Boxing Council’s Convention on November 17th.
Carlos Cuadras who has been training in the Otomi region in the mountain range perching over Toluca, popped into the WBC’s weekly Martes a Cafe, which was in the magnificent Hacienda de Cortes in Coyocan to promise his unpalatable dose of: “Medicina Papa!” and Pedro who has been preparing in Mazatlan, beamed in on zoom and grinned from ear to ear, announcing that he’s already got the effective antidote.
Outside business hours both are Sinaloenses, friends and have sparred. They are chums before and afterwards but during this key fight to unlock even greater riches, it’s strictly business. Carlos aged thirty five who is a former WBC super flyweight champion has a record of 41-5-1, 28 KO’s. Pedro who’s a year younger has a record of 40-3-1, 22 KO’s. A former WBC light flyweight champion, this is his first foray into the super-flyweight division.
Pedro views this as a difficult fight, but a challenge and an opportunity that he’s been waiting for at least five years. He’s pledging a sweet remedy to all the offered medicine. He says he’s prepared and ready for this which represents a lot, promising: “It’ll be a great spectacular.”
Carlos points out this is his final big opportunity and he’s going to make the most of it. He says he took one week off following his most recent victory has been doing intensive altitude training for more than two months and is in peak condition. He complimented his friend saying: “Pedrito is very disciplined, he’s a former world champion to be respected, but I’ve got all the Medicina papa to give to him, just enough to put him to sleep! We’ve sparred in training camps, but I’m faster than he is and I’m absolutely ready to win this fight. We are friends, paisanos, my Mum lives in Mazatlan, but believe me, there are no friends up in the ring, although we will be gentlemen. This is my ultimate opportunity and I’m going to draw on my second wind.
“Being Mexicans and ex world champions is a guarantee of a war in the ring. See you soon my good friend!”
