For many, boxing is a recreational sport used to relieve stress or for practicing physical exercise.
Yet, for a very select few, boxing is simply life. As boxers go through different stages of their sporting careers, such as national and international tournaments, they know that when the amateur boxing cycle ends, the next step is the professional boxing debut.
After debuting, the boxer’s path is not lineal, since he or she faces changes on a physical, mental, social and economic level as they know that the path to reach the big stages and discover maximum potential requires sacrifice, effort and focus.
It is seen that boxers like Jaime Munguia, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Emmanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete look for that place where they can be completely isolated and focused, away from their family environment, social life, distractions and even the interruptions of the day-to-day routine, in order to fully concentrate on the primary objective, which is to win their next fight.
Camp life is undoubtedly an exacting step towards that goal, but it is also full of challenges for the boxer, the team and the people who are waiting at home upon the awaited return.
Due to this, the boxer and their teams are constantly changing, as each fight is different with specific variables such as a different rival, different venue, different weight and different objective.
Therefore the search for sparring partners sometimes becomes complex and far reaching, given this the camp location can also vary, causing the boxer to once again undergo constant changes. In the end they will make him or her a more complete athlete with the ability to adapt to any adversity and be prepared to face the best rivals in the world.
Living a few months away, can be a great tool that may help to obtain better results in nutrition, training, mentality, physical fitness and rest. It requires great mental strength and the singular will to isolate yourself after being in your comfort zone.
For many it costs a fortune to have the resources or the support of their promoter to go to a training camp. While for others it is more difficult, but without any hesitation, boxers inside and outside camp face challenges not only in a sport level that will help them to build a champion’s mindset.
