Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez is readying to climb into the ring against Jermell Charlo and what an enticing thrill to see two such high-level boxers will gloriously face each other, both being undisputed signifies magnificent prior accomplishment and on September 30 we will have the privilege of seeing two greats vying for supremacy.
How did Canelo and Charlo come about?
Canelo announced his alliance with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on June 22nd, 2023 and originally the rival was to be Jermall Charlo, Jermell’s twin brother, but he had mental health issues to resolve and that prevented him from resuming his career at this juncture, so Jermell stepped in to face Canelo.
Canelo signed a contract for 3 fights with PBC where he would originally fight on September 16, the boxing date par excellence, but as we previously mentioned, due to the change of opponent, the fight was moved to September 30th. This three -fight contract opens the possibility to be able to see Álvarez against Benavidez who is also affiliated with PBC.
Canelo comes from defending his world belts against the British John Ryder, That fight represented the return of Canelo to his homeland Jalisco, Charlo for his part became undisputed champion by defeating the Argentine Brian “El boxi” Castaño, this fight represented a rematch and vindication for Charlo, since he had already faced Castaño in a first fight, which ended in a draw.
Canelo began his path to being undisputed against Callum Smith, then faced Billy Joe Saunders and completed the task against Caleb Plant.
Charlo embarked upon his route to being undisputed in a rematch against Tony Harrison where he recovered his WBC super welterweight belt, then he faced Jeison Rosario and won all the belts against Brian Castaño.
