Canelo Alvarez: Mexico vs. USA

 Jermell Charlo is bringing  “salt and pepper” ingredients to his spicy main course with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 30th. 

 Although both are aged thirty three, the Mexican idol is more seasoned as a fighter. His record is 59-2-2, 39 KO`s, with 472 rounds fought. While for Jermell it`s 37-1-1, 19 KO`s with 256 rounds fought.  

Here are some of the famous fights against USA fighters which built Canelo’s reputation and fame defining him: 

Alfonso Gomez

On September 17, 2011, taking place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Saúl entered the ring to defend his super welterweight crown against a rival who promised to knock him out. However, the story was very different, as the Mexican ended the match via knockout in the sixth round.

Shane Mosley

It happened on May 5, 2012, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, a fight where the Mexican took advantage of his youth to defeat one of the great stars of the ring: Shane Mosley on points, who despite being outfought, stubbornly endured the full distance. 

Josesito Lopez

With a streak of victories and ready to celebrate Mexico, Saul climbed into the ring again on September 15, 2012 to defend his super welterweight crown in a fight that attracted thousands of fans to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. That night Saul knocked López in the fifth round.

Austin Trout

It was April 20, 2013, when Austin Trout believed that he could beat Canelo and repeat the feat after besting  Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision. However, Saul became a unified champion, after defeating his rival via points.

Floyd Mayweather

This was one of the most anticipated fights for all boxing fans and experts, as two great boxing idols faced each other, for many, the definitive test for the Mexican and although Saúl sought to win, Floyd printed the first defeat in Álvarez’s career as a professional boxer. It happened on September 14, 2014. Many experts say this defeat helped Saul to boost his skills and career.

Daniel Jacobs

On May 4, 2019, Saúl successfully defended his crown in the middleweight division  in a complicated fight that went to twelve rounds and where the Mexican achieved a victory by unanimous decision.

 Caleb Plant

The fight took place at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 6, 2021, a historic night for boxing and for Saúl as he became the first undisputed Mexican super middleweight champion in the history, winning by knockout in the eleventh round.
