Boxing is one of the most complicated and sometimes unprotected disciplines where in many situations the athlete is the most punished and has the least financial security at the time of his retirement.
In 1980, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) legislature State approved the California Professional Boxer’s Pension Fund, in order to provide support for ex-boxers in the last years of their lives.
The Fund, which is administered by the California State Athletic Commission, is available to fighters who are at least 50 years old, who fight at least 10 rounds per year in a 4-year period in California, with a break of no more than 3 years and have fought 75 rounds in scheduled fights in California, with a break of no more than 3 years.
Regarding this important issue, this Friday a virtual press conference was held led by the General Consul of Mexico in San Diego, Carlos González Gutiérrez, who presented the leading team that is working together to try to bring these pensions to eligible boxers.
This is what the participants commented:
Roberto Velasco, head of the Unit for North America of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, commented: “The California commission approached the Mexican Foreign Ministry and the World Boxing Council to work in search of boxers who may be eligible for this fund. and that they could charge up to 2.5 million dollars. Together with Consul González Gutiérrez, we have created a synergy to ensure that eligible boxers receive their well-deserved pension.”
Vernon Williams, Vice President of the California State Athletic Commission commented:
“On behalf of the Commission, I thank everyone involved for supporting us in summoning all the ex-boxers who are entitled to this pension. We have created a formidable alliance with the Consulate of Mexico and with the World Boxing Council, which have allowed us to deliver checks to these boxers, who, despite no longer wearing gloves, are eligible to receive a pension for their work. This pension is a way of thanking them for all the happiness they gave us above the ring. We continue to ask for your support and that of the press for the dissemination of this information.”
Mauricio Sulaimán, President of the World Boxing Council commented: “We appreciate the invitation to join this project and I want to reiterate all our commitment to help locate eligible boxers. I feel very happy to tell you that this great program of the California State Athletic Commission is unique in the world, I congratulate all of them without exception. I also want to congratulate all the people involved in this issue of Foreign Relations and Consul González. I also want to ask all our friends in the press to support us in spreading the word about this great initiative and if you know of an eligible boxer, let us know. Thank you.”
Former boxer José Refugio Rojas, one of the beneficiaries of this program, commented: “I feel very grateful to everyone for this great initiative. It is very gratifying that after we retire they take us into account. It is a great help and I reiterate to Foreign Relations, the WBC and the California commission, my great thanks and appreciation.”
Former world champion Erik Morales commented: “On behalf of the boxers I want to thank this pension. Hopefully this great initiative will be replicated around the world. Many of our colleagues will take it as a blessing. I congratulate you all for this noble work.”
Unfortunately, many boxers who really need help are unaware of the existence of the Fund or many of them have not been able to be located.
It is very important that all boxers who are eligible receive the financial aid that corresponds to them.
