Despite the war, Ukrainian boxing defiantly refuses to buckle, fold or disappear.
Showing the mettle of fortitude, a boxing evening took place at the underground train station, Zakhysnykiv Ukrainy, located specifically in the city of Kharkov, in the east of the country.
Leading this underground initiative, the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine reported that the combat evening was held at the station for reasons of security and protection for all citizens, as more than 40 sports facilities in the city have been destroyed.
Various boxing folk from the European nation commented that boxing: ¨Has become the most popular sport in the country during the war.¨ Although, tragically boxers who have died during the armed conflict.
It should be always remembered, the Ukrainian prospect, Maksym Galinichev, who was barely 22 years old and had already won a medal at the Youth Olympic Games, Buenos Aires 2018, lost his life. He was also considered the great prospect of his country’s sport in the build up towards Paris 2024 , but he was killed in action at the beginning of the year.
The boxing card
The card called “Heroes of the Defense of Kharkov” was attended by hundreds of fans, who were eager to see the fights which show great fighting spirit.
Various members of the Ukrainian team were participating. They were returning to the ring, after lmore than a year of the war. Memorably some young and veterans also made an appearance in the ring.
Iconic Ukrainian boxing figures, namely world champions Vasyli Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk also joined the front lines, joining the troops and supporting their country at a critical moment in its history.
They received permission to leave the country, to continue with their careers and prepare for their next challenges. Usyk was in complex negotiations with Tyson Fury but they did not reach an agreement and he is expected to return at the end of the year.
Lomachenko will face Devin Haney for all the lightweight belts this weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
