Adonis Stevenson battles every single day to get improve, get stronger and inspire as The World Boxing Council`s Ambassador of Hope.
A man of smiles, energy, determination and a focus to succeed against all the odds. Adonis was WBC Champion for five years, making ten successful defences before that fateful night on December 1st 2018, when aged forty one, he fought a mandatory defence against Oleksandr Gvozkyk at the Videotron Centre in Quebec. He was stopped in round eleven, lost his title and almost lost his life. He`d suffered a traumatic brain injury, was rushed to hospital, underwent surgery and was in an induced coma for three weeks. His breathing had to be assisted, then he breathed on his own again, but his life still hung by a thread. Never, ever did he give up hope.
He said: “I was so badly injured; my body was down and I wanted to see my kid. But God told me to be patient because it would take time to recover. He told me to recover my body so I could smile at my kid once again. When you have your life, you have hope. The doctors did a great job and then God applied the finishing touches. It was like being re-born and beginning everything again. I was like a baby. I had to learn to walk and to talk again. I had to learn to control my body, because I didn`t have that then. Your determination and body are working together. One without the other isn`t possible. It`s the measure of a person.”
Adonis bears no hard feelings against Oleksandr saying: “He said good and kind things about me. I respect him and he respects me.” Adonis credits Emanuel Steward for his evolution as a boxer commenting: “Manny was magic. He showed me how to jab properly and put my left through with a BOOM. He was a great coach and a great teacher because he helped me in the ring and outside of it, with lifestyle.
“Manny`s nephew Sugar Hill Steward helped me so much. One person said he didn`t have enough experience, But he saw everything Manny did, helped me, I was quick and fast and I became world champion. I was born with natural power but developing that is another thing altogether and it took me to another level.
“Boxing is a love. Boxing loved me and I love Boxing.”
Viz the upcoming Canelo VS GGG trilogy, Adonis says it will be a very hard fight. He also cautioned: “It doesn`t matter if you are old or you are young. I want to see that fight because it`s going to be between two warriors, and when that happens, anything is possible!”
