Boxing is taking to the regions of Mexico to showcase itself nationwide, regionally as well as globally and the chosen epicenter is beautiful Tlaxcala, whose neat and well ordered urban jigsaw is complemented by verdant patchwork of fields set against a backdrop tapestry of craggy, gaunt mountain ranges.
On July 27th the bustling yet attractive and ornate town, with its traditional colonial plaza, will host a boxing mega-card at El Palenque, involving and incorporating experience plus up and coming potential, starring former WBC super-featherweight champion Miguel ”Alacran” Berchelt, NABF super-bantamweight champion Israel ”Azulito” Ramirez and WBC International flyweight champion Marilyn Badillo.
The World Boxing Council is combining and uniting with the State Government of Tlaxcala and spearheaded by State Governor Lorena Cuellar Cisneros to arrange and organize a memorable event, which will both entice, enthuse and inspire fans and young boxers, while reinforcing the region as a hub of tourism.
Locals were thrilled to greet an array of WBC all time greats, namely Lupe Pintor, Isaac Bustos, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Lupita Martinez, Rafael ”Bazookah” Limon plus Olympic Star Juan Parades, who are an integral part of the build up to this extraordinary event, which is being promoted by Zanfer.
The most important sanctioning body in boxing and its crew are punctiliously punctual and its stars plus representatives arrived bright and early at the downtown theater which was hosting the press conference. The intense organization which included the preparation of the WBC Exhibition was well underway and the finishing touches were being applied. So in the words of old hands on a building site who sent the young apprentice to the tool shed: ”Ask for a long wait/weight.” During that spell, fascinating and magical to see Marilyn Badillo and Lupe Pintor deep in conversation.
A Superstar of Boxing who has become a sought after coach. Once ferocious and ruthless in the ring, Lupe is the mildest, kindest and most modest man outside it. In offering his advice to the young fighter blessed with a movie star visage, Lupe wasn`t pontificating that it was so much better in his day. Rather, he was offering an insightful sage treasure trove of wisdom specifically concerning what top level boxing involves and its most rarefied stratosphere, where the atmosphere can be breathless. You need to gasp, then grasp the allure of the Bright lights, the rarefied heights, a nadir or two, the pitfalls, its garlands and duck the swing of the brickbats….to avoid a tangible ouch!
State Police brought in two Dutch Shepherd dogs to mouch about and have a sniff around. The World continues to evolve and revolve and it`s different to what it used to be, with an innocence forever lost. For its part the sizeable Media Corps, could scent a good story!
Many of the audience were school children, fresh faced and bright-eyed, bubbling over with enthusiasm. A chorus of delight, laced with twitters and Ah`s, as a film of Boxing in Saudi Arabia showed Rolando flanked by top brass. The youngsters were in sync and in the groove empathizing with Marilyn, who took to the microphone and told them of the sheer blood, sweat and tears it`s taken to get this far and to never give up on their dreams. They also cheered Governor Lorena when she took to the lectern. Part of her education involved Special Needs. It`s translated into her politics and governing policies. Proud to be a Daughter for Tlaxcala, she aim is inclusion and equality of opportunity. No one is excluded from the fold, field, or left out in the cold.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman sees and realizes the potential of extending Boxing fanning outwards from its traditional epicenters to progress it onwards, developing and growing it upwards. Bringing it to more audiences, exploring new horizons.
He said: ”Boxing is the soul of Mexico. More medals have been won in boxing than for any other sport. We have more than two hundred Champions and any kid walking in the plaza over there, when they see something happening, that inspires them, understanding that if you work hard at whatever you do, you can accomplish success.
”This initiative has happened because of Governor Lorena. She has the vision and the understanding of the importance of sports for society. It gives discipline, mental health and wellness, dedication and then…success.
”On July 27th there will be a great combination. A superstar in Miguel ”Alacran” Berchelt, Marilyn Badillo and a full card of interesting, well balanced fights. But the key is not only the fight night. It`s starting right now with a museum exhibition which includes items and memorabilia from Muhammad Ali, Julio Cesar Chavez, Floyd Mayweather, Canelo and the legendary Raul ”Raton” Macias.
”There is a variety of motivational events with talks by Jackie Nava, Julio Cesar Chavez and other stars, about how to combat addictions, overcoming bullying, mental health. This is building to a memorable success. The whole country is going to be watching Tlaxcala and the World is going to be watching Tlaxcala!”
An event of this magnitude draws fans like a magnet. But it might also inspire a youngster to put on the gloves and take his or her first steps on the long road leading to the glittering prize. Mauricio concurs: ”That`s exactly how we all begin. When we are kids, we look up to somebody, to try and emulate. That gives you the inspiration. I still remember Johnny Bench, that great catcher from the Cincinati Reds was my inspiration. Miguel Marin the goal keeper from Cruz Azul and Fernando Valenzuela the pitcher from the LA Dodgers. You need guidance in life to try to become somebody.
”It is absolutely great to be here in Tlaxcala!”
The reason Tlaxcala-Box really rocks, is due to the realized dream of one person. It was created and is up and running, due to State Governor Lorena Cuellar Cisneros. She envisioned the concept, designed it with a blend to unfold as a trend and with her team made it a tangible and viable reality. She explains:
”Spots is the magic key. It is so important for young people to be enthused, inspired and encouraged by sports and to participate in them. There are a lot of youngsters here today who are keen to fulfill their dreams in the beckoning tomorrows. In that we`re going to help and support them. Sports also has the potential to provide a considerable economic impetus to our State, for businesses, restaurants, tourism. An angular basis for our economy now and in the coming years. Sports has helped us open twenty two new hotels, it`s helped us to be the safest State in all the county. We are investing in sporting installations for our young people.
”We welcome sporting initiatives and sporting events with open arms. Our doors are always open.”
