The World Boxing Council congratulates the Mexican boxing community on this magnificent and special day, as the country celebrates its 210th Independence Day.
September 16th has become a great tradition in the world boxing scenario. Year by year, great fights have been celebrated by tremendous Mexican stars. The tradition started on September 15th 1972 when Erubey “Chango” Carmona faced Mando Ramons at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Ángeles, California, conquering the WBC lightweight championship.
However, the maximum representative of the Mexican holiday of holidays has been Julio César Chávez with 6 title bouts. On September 13, 1984, he conquered the WBC super featherweight championship at the Olympic Auditorium Los Angeles, California, defeating Mario “Azabache” Martinez by TKO in 8 rounds.
