The great fighter from  Canastota, New York, Carmen Basilio, conquered the welterweight championship  defeating Tony DeMarco in the twelfth round. The fight was in a ring installed at the War Memorial Auditorium of  Syracusa. The Referee was Harry Kessler. The Judges were Frank Forbes and Bert Grant.
