Mexico’s Julio César “Rey” Martínez successfully defended his World Boxing Council flyweight crown, defeating tough and courageous Welsh contender, Jay Harris, on Saturday night in Frisco, Texas.
Despite the bravery shown by previously undefeated Jay Harris, significantly heavier handed Julio César Martínez managed to land the more telling power shots to achieve victory by unanimous decision. He bloodied the Welshman`s nose, cut him above the right eye and reddened his ribs, for the cost of a small scuff mark under his own right eye.
However, earning the victory was no stroll in the park. Rather it was proved a bumpy cobblestoned rough hewn alley. Lighter hitting, yet lively and highly mobile Harris proved he possesses a true Champion`s heart, as despite the constant two handed barrage he received, he fought back at long range with admirable spirit. He landing some snappy and crisp combinations piercing a. high held guard, proving his mettle and durability.
After soaking up a crunching left right combination to the slats in the tenth round, slender Jay Harris sank to his haunches, taking the temporary refuge respite, of going down on one knee. After beating the count and taking a deep breath, he returned to the fray abashed, but showing heart, courage and determination.
Prior to the start of round 12, both fighters hugged each other, showing mutual respect. They had often touched gloves at the beginning and end of rounds. It was a truly great fight. Hard as nails, but scrumptiously clean and totally fair.
In this way, Julio deservedly won the victory with cards of 116-111, 115-112 and 118-109.
#MartinezHarris with its consumare skills and true grit, is in the running to be considered, a candidate for the best of the year.
