The World Boxing Council honored three Thai citizens with the WBC Heroes of Humanity award at a special awards ceremony in central Bangkok. The recipients were honored for their varied roles and stories during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Wichai Techasathit, a leading expert on infectious diseases, was honored for his continuing role in treating patients of the virus and for his expertise in strategy and prevention planning in combating the spread of COVID-19. The experienced medic has treated a host of patients from various countries around the world, who have been struck down with the virus, in Thailand. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Wichai stressed the importance of continuing to keep social distancing and practice enhanced personal hygiene in the ongoing battle to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Two well-known celebrities were bestowed with the award for their social activism, and for their victory in overcoming the invisible enemy. Matthew, and Lydia Deane both spent close to a month in the hospital, having been struck down with the virus in early March. Their well documented public battle the virus helped give people a better understanding of the dangers of the virus.
The WBC, better known for crowning champions in the ring, championed the cause of the three individuals, outside of the ring, as champions of humanity. The awardees were presented with their accolade by WBC Vice-President, Pol. General Kovid Bahkdibhumi.
