Undefeated two-time world champion from Phoenix David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez will fight former world champion from Canada David Lemieux in an enticing World Boxing Council interim super middleweight title bout this Saturday, May 21st at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Both knockout artists, held open training at the Central Boxing Gym in Phoenix, prior to the fight.
The fighters were accompanied by their respective trainers, Benavídez’s father, José Sr., as well as Lemieux’s renowned trainer, Marc Ramsay. This what they had to say:
David Benavidez:
“I definitely want to go out and follow my game plan. I don’t care if the knockout comes in the first, second, fifth or twelfth round. I visualize everything I’m going to do in the ring.
“I am at my ideal weight and now everything is incredible. We took that stress away after four months of hard work. Now, I’m excited to go out there and and give the fans a great fight.
“It makes me happy to be able to inspire children and see the smiles on the faces of people in my city. It’s inspiring that they come out and support me the way they do.
It means a lot to me to be here in my hometown with my family, both my son and my dad. My son Anthony is 18 months old and has given me a lot of motivation. I have a new focus and I am ready to conquer the division.”
David Lemieux:
“On fight night I will weigh around 180 pounds. I don’t care what it’s on. Maybe 190? Really do not care. I will be ready for everything he gave to the ring.
If he wants a war, he will have a war. I am strong and very confident in my abilities. I know he is a very strong fighter, but we have a plan against him. We are not worried, and we will do what we must do to be the best we can be on fight night.
“If you know David Lemieux, he has never refused to fight and he has always accepted any challenge put before him. When we had big fights in the past, we always took them. If you want to be world champion you have to fight against the best.”
Benavidez is a great fighter, but he has never fought David Lemieux and he will see what that means on Saturday night.”
