As complex as each punch

It is complicated to interpret boxing, every fight I see makes me think new things about this beautiful sport, it can be more complex than chess.

To be able to throw a high number of punches you must have an enviable physical condition, there are extraordinary cases like William “Camaron” Zepeda where everything is in your favor to have a privileged “air”, “El Camaron” was born in an area of the State of Mexico that has an enviable height to carry out the training, added that his refuge to train is usually Jiquipilco and Temoaya, a couple of towns that have an incredible height to train, The higher the altitude, the more demanding it is on the body and over time this becomes an advantage for boxers, people like Erik Morales, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jaime Munguia, Carlos Cuadras, Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada, Jackie Nava, Mariana Juarez and countless world champions have taken the Otomi Ceremonial Center, Temoaya and Jiquipilco as the site of their pre-fight camps, Zepeda has spent his entire life at high altitude and attributed his tireless boxing to being accustomed to the demands of the altitude.

Zepeda holds the record for throwing the most punches in a lightweight fight, just over 1500 punches, achieving that in a boxing match is very complicated.

Curiously, last Thursday Shakur Stevenson won the WBC lightweight belt throwing very few punches, it was not Stevenson’s own work, his opponent did not throw punches either.

Shakur had been very dominant against his previous opponents, being superior against opponents like Oscar Valdez and after Valdez I saw it very difficult for any fighter to make a fight difficult for Stevenson, until Zepeda became relevant in the division, Although Zepeda is not a boxer with big names in his record, he has not had an easy road, Zepeda was going to be the cannon fodder for Hector Tanajara, the brand new Golden Boy prospect, “The shrimp” dominated him and left nothing of that prospect, Joseph Diaz, a boxer with a lot of experience was erased from the ring by Zepeda.

What I want to get to is that for a fight to work the styles of both boxers must adapt, I’m sure William Zepeda can offer Stevenson his most complicated fight, in the end that’s what boxing is all about, take the risk, face it and know what to do with the opponent you have in front of you.

Shakur should be given his place as champion, with what happened last week he should endorse the fact that he is the WBC champion and I would love to see him face what for me is the next superstar of Mexican boxing.
