Many times, athletes spend a lot of energy in avoiding failure, which is sometimes necessary to be able to turn around both training strategies and the objectives and goals that have been set. “You also win by losing,” goes the saying. Defeat ALWAYS tells us something, it brings an explicit message: many guidelines must be modified.

All boxers in the world deserve our respect. All human beings have different reactions to situations that cause us stress, pain or discomfort, such as defeat. We cannot expect other people to react as we would like them to much less judge them. Each fighter meets defeat with the mental and emotional resources he possesses.

It’s a fact that boxers must face defeat as an inherent part of boxing itself and they must do it in the best way, for their own good. Ideally, they take it as part of a natural process that they will have to go through throughout their career, even though there are cases of athletes who retire undefeated, but these are isolated cases.

Losing is not bad, it is not the end of the world. Loss is not something a fighter does not have to be ashamed of. The pathological thing would be if the defeat is faced in an inadequate way, such as making unnecessary tantrums, disqualifying, insulting, and humiliating the rival, insulting the intelligence of the judges, getting extremely angry or threatening. You can feel impotence, anger and frustration at the moment, and this is natural, but the way to work it is not with the denial of reality.

Feeling you have “failed” is inappropriate, since the feeling of failure is manufactured by the mind and failure is also made by one with the attitudes that are shown when losing.

We must recognize that defeat will always be present in sport, accept it as an athlete that there are also limits and that when one loses, the rival is worthy of our respect and recognition.

This is fought fought under equal circumstances and the rival will always be a mirror of our successes and our mistakes. If the defeat causes conflict for the athlete, it is necessary to seek advice from a mental health professional, to help him understand why the defeat means and causes a conflict, including overcoming traumas that could be related and that manages to assimilate it in a healthy and functional way.

It must be recognized that we are unique beings, but also appreciate the greatness of the rivals we face and embrace the triumphs of others.

How to deal with a loss in boxing in a healthy way?
