{"id":51759,"date":"2021-05-24T11:32:56","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T16:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wbcboxing.com\/noticias-de-la-division-de-peso-ligero-del-wbc\/"},"modified":"2021-05-24T11:35:40","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T16:35:40","slug":"wbc-lightweight-division-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wbcboxing.com\/en\/wbc-lightweight-division-news\/","title":{"rendered":"WBC Lightweight division news"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>WBC Lightweight division news<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Recently, WBC Interim Lightweight Champion Ryan Garcia notified the WBC that he was taking a leave from boxing to address ongoing health issues.\u00a0\u00a0The WBC fully and unconditionally supports Champion Garcia.\u00a0\u00a0The WBC will stay close to him during his process, and the WBC Board of Governors will assess his situation once he is ready to return to the ring.<\/p>\n<p>The WBC has received a request to sanction the bout between the #2-rated Lightweight Javier \u201cEl Abejon\u201d Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KOs) against the #5-rated Super Featherweight contender Joseph \u201cJo Jo\u201d Diaz (31-1-1, 15 KOs) for the WBC Interim World Lightweight Championship.\u00a0 The Fortuna v. Diaz bout is scheduled to take place on July 9, 2021, in Los Angeles, California.<\/p>\n<p>A recount of the backdrop that led to Javier Fortuna\u2019s request puts that request into the proper context.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In December of 2019,\u00a0\u00a0Javier Fortuna reached the #1 position in the WBC Lightweight World Ratings.<\/li>\n<li>The then WBC World Lightweight Champion Devin Haney became unable to defend his title due to a shoulder injury, which prompted the WBC to name him WBC Champion In-Recess, thus rendering vacant the WBC World Lightweight Championship.<\/li>\n<li>The WBC then ordered a bout between #1 Javier Fortuna and the then #2 Luke Campbell for the vacant WBC World Lightweight Championship.\u00a0\u00a0That bout was contracted and scheduled to take place in April of 2020.<\/li>\n<li>Due the COVID-19 pandemic the Fortuna v. Campbell bout did not take place, which gave Champion In-Recess Devin Haney sufficient time to recover from his injury.<\/li>\n<li>Champion In-Recess Devin Haney petitioned to the WBC to be reinstated as World Champion in light of his recovery.\u00a0\u00a0The WBC granted that petition as well as a voluntary defense of his title.<\/li>\n<li>The WBC also agreed to sanction the Fortuna vs Campbell bout for the WBC Interim Lightweight World Championship, due to the fact they had entered into a contract to\u00a0\u00a0fight for The WBC \u00a0Championship.<\/li>\n<li>Subsequently, Campbell\u2019s promoter Matchroom requested that the WBC sanction Champion Haney\u2019s voluntary defense to be against #2 Luke Campbell.\u00a0\u00a0That bout never took place.<\/li>\n<li>Javier Fortuna was then scheduled to face former multi-time world champion and #3-rated Jorge Linares.\u00a0 That bout was supposed to take place in August of 2020.<\/li>\n<li>Linares contracted Covid-19 a few weeks before his bout against Fortuna, which resulted in that bout being cancelled.<\/li>\n<li>In November of 2020, Fortuna stopped Antonio Lozada in six rounds.<\/li>\n<li>Fortuna was then scheduled to fight the then WBC Interim World Champion Ryan Garcia.\u00a0\u00a0That bout would have taken place in July of 2021, but was cancelled due to Champion Garcia\u2019s ongoing medical issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In light of the fact that Javier Fortuna has not been able to compete for a WBC Championship due to reasons outside his control, and based on the merits of his request, the WBC has decided to grant it.\u00a0 Accordingly, the WBC will sanction the Javier Fortuna v. Jo Jo Diaz bout for the WBC Interim World Lightweight Championship.
