The man who elevated Mexico’s name to the pinnacle of the lower weight classes. His departure leaves an irreparable void in the sport, but his legacy as one of the WBC’s most dominant champions will live on forever…and a day.

Born on January 30, 1948, in the city of Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, Canto built an exemplary career grounded in intelligent dedication plus singular focus and a keen instinct inside the ring. Following his professional debut in 1969, his rise was a masterclass in refined technique, establishing him as the ultimate pugilistic reference in his home state. A pugilistic Prof!

His crowning moment came on January 8, 1975, when he made history by defeating the Japanese fighter Shoji Oguma on his own soil, becoming the first Yucatecan to capture a world title. That victory marked the beginning of one of the most brilliant eras in the history of this organization, as he went on to successfully defend his crown 14 times.

Famous for his ability to dodge, slip and parry punches without ever losing his composure, Canto starred in epic battles against rivals of the caliber of Betulio González and Oguma himself, proving that boxing is the art of hitting yet not getting hit. His style, often compared to a game of chess, remains the definitive manual for new generations of flyweights. He was its Grand Master.

Writer George Crowcroft summed it up exquisitely by declaring: “El Maestro Miguel Cantù displayed Einstein level ring IQ. He was a boxing genius.”

Proudly Yucatecan, Miguel was always an ambassador for the values of the WBC: loyalty, humility, and courage. His work ethic led to his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota in 1988. an honor reserved only for the greatest legends of the world’s sport.

We have lost A True Great. Miguel Canto is irreplaceable. Yet, he will forever make Mexico and the World of Boxing so very, very proud. He showed us the way.
