The Clean Boxing Program (CBP) of the World Boxing Council prioritizes not only the detection of performance-enhancing substances but also the holistic health and longevity of our athletes. In this regard, it is imperative to address smoking\u2014an addictive, chronic, and recurring disease that, despite its well-known risks, remains prevalent in society and the sporting environment.<\/p>\n

Tobacco is a plant whose leaves are consumed in various ways, but the nicotine it contains\u2014found in traditional cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and vapes\u2014is a highly addictive substance. However, the danger goes further: a single cigarette contains tar, carbon monoxide, and nearly 4,000 additional ingredients, many of which are toxic and directly responsible for multiple types of cancer.<\/p>\n

The Myth of the “Immune Athlete”<\/h4>\n

There is a common misconception that intense physical activity counteracts the effects of smoking. This is completely false. Even if an athlete has a superior ability to clear toxins from their system, cellular damage is inevitable. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood to form carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), which drastically reduces the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen to the muscles and other tissues. This leads to premature fatigue and significantly slows down recovery after physical exertion.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, smoking directly damages the lungs\u2014specifically the alveoli. If these stop functioning correctly, the body cannot obtain the oxygen it needs, resulting in a sensation of gasping or suffocation during the most demanding rounds or training sessions.<\/p>\n
