Sixty-Two Glorious Years of the WBC: The Jos\u00e9 Sulaim\u00e1n Fund<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The World Boxing Council celebrates its 62nd anniversary on February 14th as history has been made and more is to come.<\/p>\n

We now talk about one of the most successful, caring and heartfelt programs for the benefit of our boxers: The Jos\u00e9 Sulaim\u00e1n Fund.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Sulaim\u00e1n, who presided over the World Boxing Council for 38 years until his death in 2014, was responsible for important changes and benefits introduced by the WBC to make boxing better and safer.
\nDon Jos\u00e9 had a passion for protecting boxers, he fought against apartheid and any type of discrimination and abuse of power, he was recognized by the United Nations and an endless list of organizations around the world.<\/p>\n

His dream of creating a fund to help boxers in need became a reality in 2012 when Jean Claude Biver and Ricardo Guadalupe of Hublot joined the WBC, managing to raise a significant amount at an auction of luxury Hublot watches, unique pieces inspired by the greatest legendary champions.<\/p>\n

With that million dollars raised, the operation of the fund began at the Nevada Community Foundation (NCF); The NCF is an independent non-profit organization that administers the Fund and coordinates the payments of eligible people. The NCF reviews all requests for assistance to ensure that the Fund’s guidelines are met, guaranteeing that all operations are with integrity, honesty and justice.<\/p>\n

In 2014, the WBC and Fundaci\u00f3n Ring Telmex-Telcel reached an agreement where it was agreed to provide financial support to the Fund, in exchange for ring officials who participated in fights sanctioned by the organization using the Ring Telmex-Tecel logo on their uniforms. Don Carlos Slim accepted this program, which he agreed to contribute with $150,000 dollars annually for 5 years, making a total contribution of $750,000.<\/p>\n

In 2019, another Hublot\/WBC Gala Dinner was held where 1.2 million dollars were raised for the Fund. Stars who attended this gala event were: Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, George Foreman, Vitali Klitschko, Oscar De La Hoya, Jeff Fenech, Bernard Hopkins, Hozumi Hasegawa and Lou Shiming. The event included a grand tribute to the legendary musician Carlos Santana.<\/p>\n

For over 12 years, the NCF has done an incredible job analyzing all cases, developing new ideas, but above all supporting boxers during the registration process with great quality and dedication.
\nThe Jos\u00e9 Sulaiman Boxers Fund has granted more than $2 million dollars in support to fighters and former fighters from Nicaragua, Argentina, Thailand, China, Colombia, the United States, Mexico and many other countries.
