On this day in history, Hagler and Hearns shook the world in 3 rounds<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

April 15, 1985<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0At legendary Caesar\u00b4s Palace in Las Vegas , Nevada, \u00a0the middleweight undisputed championship was at stake in an incredible\u00a0contest between two extraordinary boxing legends- Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns, \u00a0in a fight\u00a0\u00a0aptly dubbed:\u00a0 “The War.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Boxing fans will always remember those eight extraordinary minutes of exchanging blows, \u00a0with great devotion, determination\u00a0and emotion,\u00a0 from two world champions in an\u00a0astonishing show that we still clearly recall more than 30 years later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two of the best and greatest exponents of world boxing, \u00a0that moulded “The War ” as one of the\u00a0greatest\u00a0\u00a0fights of all time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fight was presented as ” The War,” a personal rivalry that\u00a0 intensified during the promotional tour of 13 days, taking in 21 cities .<\/span><\/p>\n

Hagler had successfully ten times defended the WBC middleweight Crown he’d conquered in September 1980.\u00a0 While Hearns had already conquered welterweight and super welterweight divisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It was a discussion peppered with a nonsense of words, adding up to a promotional \u00a0show.\u00a0 But it was something that ultimately\u00a0 bored, tired,\u00a0bothered and irritated \u00a0me. \u00a0\u00a0At the end all\u00a0that I \u00a0just wanted to do was\u00a0 to hit his head,”\u00a0 exclaimed Hagler.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hearns was the favorite because had a great victory over the legendary Panamanian world champion \u00a0Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Duran, who was annihilated with a single blow. While Hagler needed a great battle to beat Duran in an close decisi\u00f3n\u00a0after 15 rounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those three minutes of the first round\u00a0saw\u00a0an explosion of blows between the two, \u00a0that left millions of viewers startled, thrilled and surprised by its sheer unrelenting intensity. Hagler forehead was bleeding\u00a0profusely \u00a0by the end of the first round, \u00a0but he gradually gained the initiative\u00a0over \u00a0Hearns.\u00a0 Boxing experts still seek the exact answer about the extent of Hagler’s magnificent\u00a0resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hearns managed to cause Hagler problmems. The blood masking Hagler’s face face, threatened a possible halt to the fight. That wound changed and\u00a0fired up Hagler, with a renewed sense of urgency, firing on all cylinders, until Hearns was knocked down and left with a blank stare\u00a0on his face, as \u00a0the referee Richard Steele stopped the fight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Neither had shown one scrap of reverence for the other, or even a minimum of fear, and boxing strategy went out of the window.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically Hagler emphasizes that night alone he heard the voice of his Mother in this fight and didn’t pay attention to the advice and instructions of his corner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hagler acknowledges that\u00a0\u00a0his victory over Thomas Hearns was the best moment of his boxing career.<\/span><\/p>\n
