Houston\u2019s Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) unified the super welterweight titles in his previous fight, knocking out Brian Casta\u00f1o in the 10th round of their May 2022 rematch after they drew in July 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jermell\u00a0 is training under the command and guidance of one of today\u2019s most renowned coaches, Derrick James.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has earned himself the plaudits of one of the finest and most accomplished fighters round for round around, and is justifiably confident that he will acquit himself well in his\u00a0 debut in the 168-pound division.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, we remember some of the most important fights that Jermell Charlo has waged against Latin fighters:<\/span><\/p>\n

Brian Castano II<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On Saturday, May 14 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, in a rematch for the super welterweight titles, Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) became the first undisputed super welterweight champion in the era of the 4 belts by knocking out Argentine Brian Casta\u00f1o (17-1-2, 12 KOs) in the tenth round. Both fighters came out ready and willing to give it their all from the opening peal of the bell. Casta\u00f1o improved warming to the task, as the rounds went by, but Charlo used his longer reach and more versatile lateral\u00a0 movement in the ring to successfully counterpunch the Argentine fighter. A thundering, lightning, pinpoint blow from Charlo came a few seconds before the end of the tenth round. A left hook to the body and a corker right to the face pierced Casta\u00f1o’s guard and he crashed\u00a0 to the canvas. Brian tried to beat the count, attempting to muster all the willpower within himself, but when he regained his feet, Jermell immediately pounced upon\u00a0 him and finished the fight with a searing combination to the head. Brian wasn`t let off the hook, due to those hooks! This was the first defeat for the Argentine warrior.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the toughest most exacting fight that Jermell has ever had. Charlo and Casta\u00f1o drew in a sustained hum dinger of a ring war for super welterweight supremacy, so we had to wait longer to meet the first undisputed champion in the super welterweight division. After 12 rounds in what was considered one of the best fights of 2021, the it ended as a split decision draw, with one judge in favor of Charlo, another in favor of Casta\u00f1o and the third saying Even Stephen!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After losing the title against Tony Harrison, Jermell wasted no time returning to the ring with the firm intention of re-conquering his WBC title. Enthused, he had no problems returning to victory by knocking out Mexican Jorge \u201cDemonio\u201d Cota in the third round.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a non-title fight he defeated the brave and tough as nails Gabriel Rosado by unanimous decision. <\/span>Also, during his path to sporting glory, he faced and defeated Jose Angel Rodriguez, Francisco Santana, Adan Murillo, Gerardo Cesar Prieto, Federico Flores Jr, Carlos Garcia Hernandez, Juan Serrano, Rodrigo Villareal and Jesus Villareal.
