What a champion is made of?
For a long time, boxing has been a popular sport which everyone talks about, where unknown faces become icons and idols of their people, the pride of their nations and role model. But also during this trip we have seen hundreds of thousands of boxers parade, some of them who shone in an ephemeral way, many others who passed in a volatile way through the hall
of fame; but also, some few who became legends, who dazzle in each of their performances either with their strength, their dedication, their particular style, the “ferocity” with which they fight, but especially because of the passion they show with their gloves.
However, and despite the fact that these attributes are what places them in that position, I believe that there are extra qualities that define a true king of the ring, this, thinking beyond the discipline, the hours of training, the rigor of diet, the power of the punch and all physically skills which are imperative to achieve the desired objective.
A true champion possesses invisible qualities, which can only be perceived when we have the opportunity to see them in action. I talk about the unwavering will to triumph, to those who, even after having
fallen, rise up with fists full of courage and determination to release punches, not coming from their guard, but from the heart, even when they are physically exhausted.
The genuine champion is the one who, knowing adversity, does not renounce, who is aware not only of his potential but also of a privileged spirit that leads him to the front and always directs him to seek victory.
And, it is that we have seen this unwavering vigour in some boxers, that even when their body cannot take it anymore, a “Something” appears in them that leads them to continue to take with this the respect and
admiration of the spectators, as it is a fact that is always appreciated and applauded.
A determination based on a passion with which they are born and that have earned a place in boxing history, but also the hearts of the fans…
Muhammad Alí, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Willie Pep, Manny Pacquiao, Roberto Durán, Sergio Martínez, Floyd Mayweather, Israel Vázquez, Juan Manuel and Rafael Márquez, Julio César Chávez, Humberto
González, Francisco Vargas, Carlos Zárate, Lupe Pintor, Marco Antonio Barrera, Carlos Monzón, Oscar de la Hoya, just to name a few, boxers that make us remember that boxing is not only a sport of strategy, hitting or physical condition, but also of an accumulation of illusions, courage and honour.
Today I have the strongest conviction that a champion is not only made of victories, knockouts, powerful punching, good coaches, long hours in the gym, a healthy and athletic body; A genuine king of the ring is one
who does not give up, who is aware not only of his physique but also of a privileged spirit, who finds balance in all areas of his life, who lives in the distant dream he had in childhood, and that, over the years has not lost his will. That “something” that makes him preserve the humility typical of victorious men.
