Boxing is experimenting a great era, despite the stoppage caused by the pandemic, there are multiple divisions with talented boxers, undefeated champions, dangerous prospects and great threats in lower divisions, plus even sports legends who are in the last stage of their careers.
We can find a special case of this dynamic in the welterweight division. The Welterweight is a mythical category in our sport. It was part of the 8 original divisions that the National Sports Club in England created, in order to group boxers into categories by weight seeking to have comparable competition level.
The history of this division has been carved out by legendary boxers. They have left their golden imprint and have defined the highest standard expected.
Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, “Barbados” Joe Walcott, Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather, Oscar de la Hoya, Jose Napoles, Roberto Duran, Emile Griffith, Pernell Whitaker, Shane Mosley, Carlos Palomino and John H. Stracey, are just some of the big names that have made remarkable history in this category.
Right now, the 147-pound division is packed and loaded with big names, giving us endless possibilities to witness epic fights. The fans are eager and waiting patiently for the following names to fight each other to prove, once and for all, who is the best fighter in the division in this new golden era.
Errol Spence Jr.
World Boxing Council and IBF welterweight champion. Undefeated in 27 fights with 21 KOs. He has defeated various world champions including: Kell Brook, Chris Algieri, Mikey Garcia, Shawn Porter, Lamont Peterson, among many others. After suffering a serious car accident in 2019, Errol understood that he now has a second chance to live and make boxing history. Spence Jr. looked brilliant in his last appearance in the ring to defeat the warrior, Danny Garcia. “The Truth” has always expressed his sincere willingness to face the big names to prove he is the best fighter in the division and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of today.
Considered by dozens of specialists as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters. He has been a lightweight, super lightweight and welterweight world champion. Unbeaten in 37 fights with 28 KOs, he possesses an aggressive and unique conventional right handed or southpaw style. He has defeated fighters including: Kell Brook, Amir Khan, Viktor Postol, Julius Indongo, Ray Beltran, Joe Benavidez and many others. One of the most anticipated fights by fans is the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford duel.
An authentic boxing legend. World champion in 6 divisions (Many consider that Manny is champion in 8 divisions; however, when he fought vs. Hatton <superlight> and Barrera I <feather>, none of the belts from the 4 recognized boxing sanctioning bodies were at stake). He is recognized for fighting the very best from 112 to 154 pounds while maintaining his style, power, aggressiveness and speed. Political and social leader of great relevance in the Philippines. He has defeated fighters Erik Morales, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Márquez, Timothy Bradley, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, among many others. Despite being considered a veteran, in 2019 he managed to majestically defeat then-unbeaten champion Keith Thurman to become a world champion again. Many believe that Manny has a couple great fights left in him, before his retirement and that despite being 42 years old, he can still pose great problems and even defeat the great fighters in the division.
A latent threat in the division. He has only been defeated once and it was via split decision against Manny Pacquiao. He has defeated fighters including Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Robert Guerrero, among others. Recovered from some injuries that have paused his career, Keith is ready to prove he is a real threat and that he can defeat the big names in the division.
Feather, super feather, lightweight and super lightweight world champion. He was long considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters. Although his foray into the welterweight division against Errol Spence Jr. was not successful, Mikey has not stopped training to fulfill the difficult goal of being world champion in 5 divisions, showing great improvement in his last battle. He has defeated Jessie Vargas, Robert Easter Jr., Adrien Broner, Roman Martinez, Juan Manuel López, among other greats.
“Showtime” Shawn Porter is a guarantee of great fights. He has an aggressive style and added to that, his determination and heart highlight him to be considered an extremely dangerous opponent. He has already managed to be world champion. He has never been knocked out and his 3 losses were very close fights against great champions, who were going through their finest moments. He has defeated Adrien Broner, Andre Berto, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas.
World champion at 140 and 147 pounds. Danny “Swift” Garcia has the heart and mindset of a champion. He has an impeccable technical style and is always ready to face the best fighters in the division. He has defeated Amir Khan, Erik Morales, Zab Judah, Lucas Matthysse, Robert Guerrero, among others. Danny is ready and motivated to show that he is among the division´s best.
Vergil Ortiz Jr.
His irruption on the welterweight scene has gained notoriety in the last year. Despite being only 23 years old, Vergil is shaping up to become the future of the division. After defeating former champion Maurice Hooker in his last fight, Ortiz challenged Terence Crawford, announcing to the entire division that he is ready for a position within the 147 pounds elite.
