A magnificent, uplifting and enthralling finale to another week of WBC Talks motivating everyone in the midst of the Covid 19 Pandemic, with the one and only Tyson Fury, the World Boxing Council Heavyweight Champion.
A giant of a man at six feet nine inches tall and two hundred and seventy two pounds in fighting trim, with a heart and a character to proportionally match. Tyson and Wife Paris have been inspiring people to do workouts at home via instagram. One person told them it had got her off alcohol dependence, not having touched a drop in 30 days plus. Tyson and Paris have known each other since they were teenagers. He describes her as his Rock.
Tyson who`s currently training four times per day, six days a week, says his aim is to defend the title 20 times saying: “Just stack em up, and I`ll knock them down.” His favorites of the current crop of heavyweights include Wilder, Joshua, Usyk and Whyte. While going back a tad, it`s Ali, Holmes, Lennox, Joe Louis and Marciano. Tyson says that everything evolves including size, power, speed and strength. But in this era boxers can totally concentrate on being full time professionals. Times, modes and methods have changed. The balance has been tipped and tippled! Back in the day, some of the fighters used to drink brandies between rounds to fortify themselves! Tyson himself fancied a beer before one fight night. People in the bar offered him more, but he stuck to just one.
Many people doubted that Tyson could come back after three years out, but he achieved it and the WBC Mayan Belt is placed plus positioned above all of the others in his trophy cabinet. He said: “When I returned in 2018 it was about showing that anything is possible. I came back from being four hundred pounds in weight, depressed and suicidal. I wanted to prove that with dedication anything is possible and to aim for the stars. This is a short life. So for me it`s living life and leaving a legacy. There is always a way back. You`ve got to find the path back and I love to help people. I just hope that I can be good for the Sport. I hope to bring the heavyweight division back to the glory days.”
Tyson Fury spoke about the depths of despair that he suffered, planning to crash a Ferrari car into a bridge at high speed and kill himself. But a voice inside him told him that his kids would grow up without a father, so he used the brakes and pulled up with his heart beating out of his chest and tears streaming out of his face. He sought help from a doctor, but not the anti depression medication.
On Halloween Night 2017, he was at a bar in a skeleton suit and he asked himself what he was doing there, so he went home. There, he went down on his knees and asked God to help him. When he got up he felt like a welterweight with a weight lifted off his shoulders. He told Paris he would again be heavyweight champion again and she believed him. It happened!
Life started as a monumental fight for Tyson Fury on August 12th 1988. He was three months premature and weighed just one pound. He died three times and the doctors despaired, but his Father then and there predicted that he would become heavyweight champion of the World, naming him after Mike Tyson, who`s become a great friend.
Even as a child Tyson was fascinated by Boxing, which is rooted deeply in his gypsy tradition and culture. He went to car boot sales buying and collecting fight videos. His favorites were Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes, but also Michael Spinks who he praises as a technical boxer and a very talented fighter.
When he`s training Tyson loves all music, but especially Tom Jones and Tyson has a good singing voice. Remember when he sang American Pie, after winning the WBC title?
Emanuel Steward proved to be a key inspiration in Tyson`s early career. Fate took him to a travel agent and a flight to Detroit, where he found Emanuel Steward, after initially going via taxi to the former site of the famous Kronk Gym. On this initial trip Tyson planned to stay a fortnight and ended up doubling that. He stayed at the Great Man`s house being treated like family. And when he got into the ring, the old timers said: “He`s crazy, but he`s got rhythm!” Married young with a Wife and Family, Tyson could not go globe trotting with Emanuel, but fate has circled as his trainer is Javon “Sugarhill” Steward, who`s Manny`s nephew. Emanuel had constantly introduced Tyson as: “My next Champion!”
Tyson says he`d love to fight in Mexico, explaining that Emanuel Steward advised him that to be a great champion you have to travel the World, following the example of Muhammad Ali. Tyson said: “I represent the World and would love to box all over the World.”
Concluding a fascinating talk Tyson chose the most brilliant elements which distinguish the best of the best.

Hand Speed: Sugar Ray Leonard.
Heart: Tyson Fury!
Defense: Wilfredo Benitez.

With Tyson Fury, what you see is what you get. There are depths, but they`re not hidden depths. An intelligent boxer and an intelligent man, who cares and is helping people combat depression, by example and through encouragement. A man who has fought back to triumph from rock botton, against all the odds with the love and support of his family and self belief, when few believed or even imagined it was possible, after a three year gap.
An inspiration which for students of boxing and students of life it`s a must, to listen to this conversation in its entirety. The dove has flown and it has aptly landed! Here is the link.
