
Pioneer of women’s boxing, Laura Serrano was born on October 20, 1967 in Mexico City, she started boxing when studying law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City.
Initially , Laura only did boxing as a way to stay in shape; However, she soon progressed to the next stage. On May 7, 1994 she faced Christy Martin, who to date is considered the most successful and prominent female boxer in the United States. On that occasion and this being her professional debut, Laura achieved a draw, the bout taking place at the MGM Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Laura’s next fight was against world champion Deirdre Gogarty, whom she halted in the seventh round in what was the first women’s boxing card held at the Aladdin Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
After recovering from an ankle injury, Serrano returned in 1999 to defeat world champion Tracy Byrd. She successfully defended her title against Alicia Ashley, Gina Greenwald and Kelsey Jeffries.
