Former champion Iran Barkley, 64, who defeated Tommy Hearns in 1988 and 1992 to become a three-weight world champion, suffered some health issues last week.
Barkley competed from 1982 to 1999, finishing his career with 43 wins (27 KOs), 19 losses, and one draw. Like many boxers of his time, Barkley fought too long and was already past his prime when he suffered a losing streak toward the end of his time in the sport.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaimán Saldívar and the entire WBC Family send their best wishes for our champion’s speedy recovery.
“Iran Barkley is in the hospital. I spoke with him and he’s in good spirits. The prayers of the global boxing family will be greatly appreciated and helpful. He has been a dear friend for many years,” Mauricio commented on social media.
