
Twelve years ago, in Mexico City, one of the most important initiatives for boxing was established, “Ring Telmex-Telcel,” a program of economic support for 24 boxers, amateurs and professionals, with the aim of ensuring that young people can fully concentrate on their sports activity. But at the same time, keep motivated to continue their studies in addition, to a retirement fund created for them.
Today, our WBC Talks in its 92 edition was dedicated to and focused upon this shining and pioneering initiative, which has nurtured and produced 18 world champions. Since its foundation, the Ring Telmex team, led by Mr. Carlos Slim, Arturo Elías Ayub, José Aboumrad and Rogelio Herrera, has set themselves the task of seeking new talents, constantly observing the fighters, graduating progress, finding the best in the team to provide them with an opportunity to be awarded with grants, as long as these young people are a good and decent example in their daily life.
Arturo Elías Ayub who was one of the special guests of this Talks, outlined that this is the developmental importance of this sport program, and assured that it is a priority to continue paying special attention to it, as this represents a factor of beneficial change for society, instilling important values, highlighting teamwork, reward for effort, goal achievement, fellowship and healthy competition.
Rogelio Herrera, who has been the captain of this ship for 12 years, recalled special and memorable moments with his “Godchildren” as he calls them, and said just how proud everyone is, to see the wonderful growth of each one of them, as many grant holders have gone on to become WBC world champions such as Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, who has became a tremendous example to follow, in addition to Miguel Berchelt, Ibeth Zamora, Mariana Juárez, to name but a few.
The fighters Ibeth Zamora, Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdés, were emphatic when saying that belonging to the program has made a significant and decisive evolving difference in their careers, since having this support allowed them to focus one hundred percent on their training, in addition to being an incentive inspiration and encouragement by proudly wearing the Ring Telmex-Telcel colors.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán also recalled one of the most valuable and humane actions that the Ring Telmex Foundation has carried out, involves granted 27 life pensions; 25 of them to former world champions and two to their widows, something that has not been seen in any other part of the world. It`s unique and exemplary.
He thanked Don Carlos Slim, who immediately paid attention to the request made by Don José, a man who was always caringly concerned about the future of those, who raised the sporting name of Mexico to great heights, and later by various circumstances fell into misfortune.
He added that the Ring Telmex Telcel Foundation is an example worldwide, as there has never been such a benevolent organization in the world for our sport and praised the tireless work of Carlos Slim, Arturo Elías Ayub, José Aboumrad and Rogelio Herrera, who, via their kindness, vision and open handed as well as open hearted generosity, have changed plus better the lives of so many young people. Those who dream of glory and fortified by this support, reach the summit of success.
