On this occasion, we had the opportunity to talk with people, who are instrumental and fundamental to the successful development of Boxing.
Influential figures in the media, photographers, organizers, crisis solvers, media managers and even the great champion, Shawn Porter, came together to tell us about the great world of boxing behind the scenes, and also to give their forecasts on how boxing will be readjusted considering the current world reality.
One of the essential elements is staying in control of a boxing event by remaining cool and collected, remembering that nothing is more important than the fighters who are the ones who put their lives on the line. Anything can go wrong at any moment, especially in a live television production. Yet it`s the job of everyone involved to insure that it runs like clockwork. A quick series of KO`s on the undercard, a power failure or some other untoward happening, has to be covered by pre-production.
In fight night itself the fruit of months of preparation, graphics, replay, analysis by the experts most meld into a smooth and seamless production. It`s all about executing….or not! Victor Silva spoke about the boost of adrenaline as the countdown of 5, 4, 3, 2 and then one, and then you are on air, and only inches away from the ring action, which provides a surge of energy and with it focus, plus concentration.
Shawn Porter talked about his cohesive team led by his dad, which is a well organized unit. But he recalled an occasion when he shared a changing room with Anthony Dirrell. No problem as they are friends from childhood. But Anthony`s loud and vibrant music boomed an interesting blend with Shawn`s religious music. Shawn`s walk on music is: God and Me. He said: “God is with me in the ring, giving me the ability to do the things I do.” Shawn also mentioned what an honor it was to greet the famous Bobby Brown in his locker room on one occasion. He said how important it is to have the backing of fans in a crowd, but it`s also essential to adapt and once the bell rings, the focus is your opponent. BTW, his favorite color is green!
The economic ripples which are following the Pandemic have to be surfed and overswept. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said: “Everything is going to suffer, so every activity will have to adjust. The WBC Board has approved flexibility in rules, case by case, because there has to be justice.”
Remote judging from the safety of home is in important dynamic and part of a protocol. Adaptation with a focus on safety first, is essential. Mauricio said: “Boxing is always the leader. Boxing is going to show the strength and the way.” The seesaw way will balance, relieve stress and balance the ups and downs of a unique crisis.
