An unbeatable closing of the week with a superb special guest, a world champion who marked a history in the sport, loved and admired, of course we refer to the great Marco Antonio Barrera.
Marco recalled his beginnings in boxing, first in the amateur field where he won 65 fights and then at the age of 15 when he debuted as a professional under the watchful eye of coach Rudy Pérez who was instrumental in guiding him and his brother Jorge Barrera, and would be by his side through his career.
Recalling the reaction of his parents when he told them that he wanted to box professionally; Marco confessed that he would not like to see his children up in the ring. However and at the insistence of his son Mateo, he already let him put on his gloves and start training.
Obviously Marco talked about the trilogies that marked a before and after in his career. Of course we talk about his fights with Erik Morales, which he described as true wars.
He confessed that there was genuinely animosity between them. Marco recalled that at a dinner organized by the World Boxing Council, Don José Sulaimán asked them to leave the enmity and to give each other a hug.
However, and in a very curious way, this rivalry ended thanks to the wives of both, as he remembers that, at a party, Erik’s daughter, who was a baby at the time, cried inconsolably in her mother’s arms and Marco’s wife, without knowing who she was, went to help her with the baby, who stopped crying almost instantaneously and there the friendship began between them.
Marco made special emphasis on the teachings that this pandemic has brought, for him, breaking with the stereotypes that men should not intervene in housework, since in this quarantine he has had to get involved and be cooperative. He assured that being at home 24 hours has allowed him to be more in communication with his children and with his wife, strengthening the bonds of union and respect.
Returning to the subject of which he is passionate, Barrera commented that his idol is and always will be Salvador Sánchez and at the request of the public confessed that the story of the weigh-in after which he always dined a double meat hamburger with potatoes and soft drink is true.
