World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, was greeted and hosted by Dr. Laurentino Cortizo, President of the Republic of Panama in a special meeting which was cordial, friendly and productive.
One of the most memorable moments was when Mauricio presented Dr. Laurentino a famous Green and Gold Belt, due to his dedicated efforts promoting sports.
The Panamanian President was happy to greet Mauricio, together with the small group which accompanied him to a beautiful hall in the Palace of the Garzas.
Darryl Peoples, who leads the International Boxing Federation, plus Panamanian Juan Carlos Tapia, Whois a boxing icon, journalist expert and Guinness record holder, and director of “The Best of Boxing”, attended the meeting. Also the well-known Uruguayan promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and his wife, in addition to boxing representative Luis de Cubas as well as Panama’s sports and tourism minister.
During the meeting, the President of the WBC reminded Dr. Cortizo Cohen that Panama was one of the founding countries of the World Boxing Council almost six decades ago. And they also talked about the possibility of important social responsibility boxing programs within the near future, through pro and amateur boxing, in addition to the further development the BoxVal program- an initiative of the Scholas Foundation from Pope Francisco.
Panama has produced some mighty boxing superstar idols. Roberto Durán, “Manos de Piedra”, Ismael Laguna, Hilario Zapata and many others.
