In an election held this Thursday in Pylos, Greece, the majority of members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted for former Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry to be elected as the new President of the Olympic Movement’s governing body.
Kirsty replaces German Thomas Bach. The 41-year-old Olympic champion will be the tenth person to assume the IOC presidency and the first woman in 131 years.
Coventry will also be the first person from Africa to hold the top position of the organizing body of the Olympic Games. She will serve an eight-year term.
The WBC and its President, Mauricio Sulaiman, congratulate Kirsty Coventry on this important appointment and wish her every success in her tenure.
