Adorned by the famous Green and Gold belt of the World Boxing Council (WBC), the “WBC-BOXING WITHOUT CHAINS” tournament is proving a great success in the Argentine penitentiary system.
This presentation was made in unit 40 (Lomas de Zamora), and in unit 43 (González Catán), where both: inmates participating in the program were present, as well as teachers, technicians and unit managers.
“Boxing without Chains” is a program of social reintegration through sport, which has been developing for 7 years in different prisons throughout the country. Two years ago, the program received international recognition from the World Boxing Council, in Kiev (Ukraine).
From unit 2 of Devoto, to unit 15 of Río Gallegos, the program has been an important part of the social and educational program.
Today it takes place in unit 38 of Sierra Chica (where the program began), and in the units of Lomas de Zamora and González Catán.
The presentation included the authorities of the units, professors María Villalba (Boxing without female chains, unit 40), Leonardo Medina (U40), and Hernán Redondo (U43).
Those coordinating the project are : Fernando Pereyra (Olavarría), Martín Figueroa (Tandil), Martín Danese (Lomas de Zamora), Diego de Souza, Fabián Gusmán (Lanús), and Marcos Arienti (Bs As). Also the teachers of the club Villa Raffo Lionel Ramos and Ignacio Maturano, who`ve joined to support the program.
“We are going to make a Luna Park fight, but during the day, and in a jail,” said Christian Rodríguez, director of unit 40.
“This belt is the show of support from the WBC family, and especially its President, Mauricio Sulaiman,.Their support to this program has been going on for many years. Everyone should feel this achievement, this support as their own. But the Green and Gold Belt will only be for the winner. So, let’s get to train!”
The day ended with a boxing clinic, in the ring they have installed in the SUM (multipurpose room) of unit 43, with a large presence of inmates.
