After 21 fights and 199 rounds, the brilliant Ukrainian boxer announces his retirement from professional boxing.
Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko has announced he is hanging up his gloves. With a great career, being world champion in two divisions, noted for his footwork precision and ring generalship, Lomachenko undoubtedly achieved and is already perceived as an all time great by the fans.
Let’s remember the fabled career of the legendary Ukrainian boxer.
After leaving an impressive mark of 92-1 in his amateur boxing career and winning two gold medals at the Olympic Games (Beijing 2008 in featherweight and London 2012 in lightweight), “Matrix” made his professional debut on November 12, 2013.
Mexican José Luis Ramirez was his first opponent. Lomachenko won the fight in the fourth round by KO, gaining his first international title.
In his next fight, he competed for his first world championship and experienced defeat for the first time. Orlando Salido won the fight by split decision. But glory was just around the corner.
Just three months later, Vasyl had another shot at the title. Gary Allen Russell Jr. was the opponent. He won the fight by majority decision and his first world championship.
After eight successful defenses of his championship, “Hi-Tech” moved up to lightweight in search of new challenges.
His first opponent at 140 pounds was Jorge Linares, assuredly one of the most exciting fights of his career.
During this war, Linares knocked Lomachenko down in the sixth round, but “Matrix” got up to win the fight. In the tenth round, Vasyl sent Linares to the canvas and ended the fight.
After two fights and another world championship, on August 31, 2019, Lomachenko fought for a WBC title for the first time.
The WBC lightweight world title was vacant, and Luke Campbell and Vasyl were chosen to fight for the belt. “Hi-Tech” managed to knock Campbell down in the eleventh round with a right hand to the face, from which he got up. The Ukrainian won by unanimous decision, becoming the Green and Gold Champion for the first time.
After a few years and more victories, in 2023, Lomachenko faced Devin Haney in a controversial fight for fans. The undisputed lightweight championship was at stake, and Lomachenko tried to take it from Haney.
After twelve intense rounds, the judges awarded Devin the victory by unanimous decision, although many saw the Ukrainian as the victor.
His last fight was last year against George Kambosos Jr. Lomachenko won the fight by TKO and with it, his last world championship.
Vasyl Lomachenko retires with a record of 18-3 (12 KOs) and as the lightweight world champion.
The WBC thanks Lomachenko for his brilliant career.
