After an absence of two and a half years, former world champion Keith Thurman, originally from Florida, will face Texan Mario Barrios, in a comeback.
This fight that will take place at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, will be an eliminatory endorsed by the World Boxing Council.
Thurman in his last contest was defeated with a split decision by Manny Pacquiao and between injuries, a contagion of coronavirus and the lack of dates on the calendar for the end of 2021, this obliged him to wait.
Willing to retake his place in the welterweight category, Thurman recognizes that there is pressure to get a good victory, but he is fully determined to regain his level:
“I’m happy with my return. I’m excited to be back in Vegas, injury-free and ready to put on a great fight for the fans. It’s not ideal to let time go by like this, but it was a blessing, I meditated and organized, prioritized.
“There is always pressure in the fights, but you must have the pressure to be able to turn coal into diamonds. It is the warrior’s way, but it has a lot of beauty. A round of applause to Mario Barrios who wants to make a name in this division. We will make new stories “, commented Thurman , who returns with 33 years and a 29-1 record, with 22 knockouts.
Thurman explained that for his return he had a deck of fighters to choose from and he chose Barrios, who has just lost to Gervonta Davis, for being the one with the best record and because he knows they will put up a great fight for styles.
“Once I feel comfortable, I will go for greatness. We know that we have fallen off the ladder and we are looking up. That’s okay, because we’re going to take one step at a time to get back to where we were. The fire has been burning inside of me all my life. When you are in this sport, you are in it to win. You must do it. That competitiveness is natural for me. It doesn’t matter how long I’m gone, I’m thinking about boxing.”
