The WBC is calling on boxing commissions to regulate clandestine fights that lack security, especially for the fighters.
Lately, clandestine fights—from “vale tudo” to MMA, bare-knuckle fights, and slap contests—have become popular. These are not regulated, and the sequelae that participants can suffer are deeply worrying.
Boxers like Paulie Malignaggi and Alfredo Angulo, among others, who can no longer compete in boxing, have opted to fight without gloves. This is a very dangerous and risky practice for their own health.
It was recently announced that Fernando Garza, a fighter from a league called “Clandestino,” is asking for help to have medical studies done as he is not in good health.
“From the WBC, we want to call on people to report these dangerous practices, and we are going to work with the boxing commissions in Mexico to regulate these fights. This situation is worrying. There must be rules and medical regulations to protect the integrity of the fighters, who are the most important thing,” commented Mauricio Sulaimán.
