The WBC is greatly saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Manuel Mancera Canales, who served as president of the Amateur Boxing Committee of Ciudad Juárez from 1989 to 1992.
During his tenure, Juárez became the host city for most state-level selection tournaments. With his leadership, the Juárez delegation dominated the amateur boxing scene for three years, winning 8 of 11 championships and relegating their fierce rival, Chihuahua, to second place with 3 titles and Delicias with 1.
His time as president saw the birth of the “Great Generation” of Juárez boxers, producing local heroes like Jesús Quirino García, and challengers for the WBC world title such as Saúl Duran, Mauro Lucero, and Juan Carlos Ramírez. Other great fighters emerged as well, including Carlos Contreras, Jesús Gutiérrez, Ricardo Estrada, Armando Bosques, and Martín Félix, to name a few.
The World Boxing Council mourns the loss of a great man of boxing and wishes his family and friends comfort and strength in their time of deep sorrow.
