During the traditional “Coffee Tuesdays” Chief Commissioner Francisco Javier Moreno, undersecretary of traffic control of the CDMX Security Secretariat, announced the grand start of the “José Sulaimán” tournament which pays well-deserved tribute to David “Macetón” Cabrera, a distinguished member of the police and three-time Mexican boxing champion.
Thrilled to be with the entire boxing family but especially to be able to share this moment with Gabriela, David’s wife and the two children of this legend, Francisco commented that since the tournament was announced the participation has been tremendous and today, just a few days before the start of the qualifying phase, the applications continue to arrive.
He commented that the tournament will start on September 18 and will culminate with a grand final where 11 belts will be contested on the 28th at the iconic Arena Coliseo.
“This will be a very emotional tournament, as it is not only about promoting the careers of our police/boxers but also remembering and honoring the memory of a great person. A a man who, despite adversity, showed us that will and desire to get ahead is bigger than anything.
David was an example of overcoming and fighting, which continues to inspire us today because his legacy lives on in each of us who know his story.
For the president of the WBC, Mr. Mauricio Sulaimán, David’s story is worth telling because even after a terrible accident during his work as a police officer that left him with a leg issue for life, he found a way to move forward. Despite his leg condition, which was no impediment for him to shine in boxing from his debut in 1977 where, against all odds, he knocked out Concho Muñoz, a rival who surpassed him in both weight and height.
For the organization’s leader, David Cabrera is and will always be one of the most important national champions of the history of Mexican boxing and he showed his gratitude to the Secretary of Security of CDMX for organizing this great tournament in his honor.
