A tiny sensation at the World Boxing Council’s Martes de Cafe in the shape and form of The Golden Diamond.
None other than six years old Layton Evia, who is from Playa Del Carmen. The precocious little boxer in the making, who will have to fatten up to make straw weight, already knows how to throw a pinpoint jab, a curving left hook, clusters of swarming combinations and has grasped Boxing`s most important rule…defend yourself at all times. What a Gem!
The youngster briskly went through his paces and then was helped by Juan Perez ”El Guerito De Tepito” who at the grand old age of fifteen is a two time amateur champion and the WBC`s Youth Ambassador. Guerito used his hands as pads and young Layton laid into them with some flashy tapping mitt work.
His repertoire, which also included a self invented roundhouse right, was lustily applauded by the Boxing Press who saw great future potential in the lad. Nice choice of nickname because as Shirley Bassey sang: ”Diamonds are Forever.”
In the meantime, prior to the call of the Olympics and then the phone ringing off the hook from competing major promoters, Layton is content to sit next to his Dad Siam and play with some purple plastercene. He`s molding his future?
