Undisputed World Middleweight Champion Claressa Shields will take on No. 1 ranked Maricela “La Diva” Cornejo in the main event of a card taking place on Saturday, June 3 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Hanna Gabriels was originally scheduled for a rematch with Shields. However, Salita Promotions has now announced the change of rival.
Shields from Michigan is geared up to bring back big time boxing in a big way to Motor City.
“I told my team to get me the best,” Shields said. “Cornejo is a tall, strong fighter, full of pride, that she is in very good shape and wants to beat me. She is ranked number one. That’s precisely what I want for my homecoming in Detroit and for my fans around the world. I look forward to a great performance on June 3.”
Undaunted Cornejo audaciously snapped: “Shields will lose to a warrior of Mexican blood in the boxing ring. I’ve been through amazing training camp and I’m ready for a war. On June 3 I will become the Undisputed Champion!”
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist avenged her only amateur loss last October when he traveled to the UK to win the WBO middleweight title from Savannah Marshall by decision.
Cornejo, from Washington, who now trains in Las Vegas guided by renowned trainer Ismael Salas, has won three straight. She fought in March knocking out Sheila Cunha in the first round.
The fight is organized by Salita Promotions and will be broadcasted on DAZN.
