American Shakur Stevenson, the WBO champion, won the World Boxing Council belt by defeating Mexican Óscar Valdez by unanimous decision this Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Stevenson dominated the fight with intelligence, speed and accuracy, dominating Valdez for most of the fight.
The American’s work was superior, and there was no doubt on the cards. The judges saw him win 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109. Valdez, who was knocked down in the sixth round, showed great heart that has characterized his career, but it was not enough to beat a skilled Stevenson.
At the end of the fight and knowing the result, Stevenson appeared in the ring by kneeling and proposing marriage to his girlfriend.
With this win, Stevenson improved his record to 18-0, with 9 knockouts. Oscar Valdez lost his unbeaten record, leaving his record at 30-1, with 23 knockouts.
