Silver at the crossroads for Broner and Figueroa
Adrien Broner will face Omar Figueroa on August 20 in Hollywood, Florida, in a fight where the World Boxing Council’s Silver Super Lightweight title will be at stake and is presented by Premier Boxing Champions.
Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) was set to fight Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) in April 2018, but that fight was postponed due to Figueroa sustaining an injury. Broner, on the other hand, fought Jessie Vargas to a draw and was coming off a loss to Mikey Garcia.
Broner was then defeated by Manny Pacquiao before scoring a decision over Jovanie Santiago in February 2021. That was Broner’s only win since a split decision over Adrian Granados in 2017.
Broner remains a big name. The 32-year-old American’s fight with Figueroa will take place at 140 pounds, his first at that weight since he was defeated by Garcia.
“I’m going to go in there to try to stop Figueroa,” said Broner, of Cincinnati. “What I expect from him is the same Figueroa that we always see. He’s going to try to make it a tough fight. Every fighter is different, but I don’t think he’s going to be hard to hit.”
Figueroa, also a former world champion, has not won since a decision over John Molina in 2019. The 32-year-old has fought just twice since then: a decision loss to Yordenis Ugás in 2019 followed by a loss to Abel Ramos last year. .
“I am excited to move into the next phase of my life and career. Being clear-headed has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. Now I can focus 100% on my boxing career,” said Figueroa.
