WBC super welterweight world champion, Californian Sebastián “The Towering Inferno” Fundora, will seek another “Reach for the sky” victory, when he faces former unified world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman in the main event of a PBC PPV on Prime Video card, on Saturday, October 25, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Stepping into the ring after a dominant victory in his rematch against former world champion Tim Tszyu in July, Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) shared the aggressive mindset he and his team have put to the test:
“It was a demolition. We wanted to persevere and get him out of there. We wanted him to feel defeated before the fight ended and to show that nothing he did could hurt us. After the fight, he said he felt like he was shadowboxing, and that’s what we plan to make every fighter feel. Whether it’s because of my height or my strength, we want the opponent to feel like it’s impossible to win,” commented Fundora, who is trained by his father, Freddy Fundora.
Ahead of his next fight, Fundora has been training alongside his sister for her undisputed title defense this weekend. With the historic Fundora siblings fighting so close on the calendar, Sebastián has taken the opportunity to learn from his sister’s training.
“Training together makes both of us better. Seeing her train and work, especially because she’s also a southpaw, helps me learn strategies to apply in my own training and work. She’ll do her thing and defend her crown, and I’ll be right after to defend mine.”
Fundora, 27, will face the most experienced opponent of his career, former unified welterweight world champion Thurman, a fighter who was competing on the sport’s biggest stage while Fundora was still on the rise.
“I grew up watching Thurman,” Fundora said. “We constantly watched many of his biggest fights. I’ve always thought he’s a great boxer. I can’t say I expected to fight Thurman one day, but I knew it was possible because I always look for the toughest fights, and now we’re here.”
With two consecutive stoppage victories, Fundora reiterated that he will be looking for his third straight win on October 25. Although he and Thurman have opposite personalities outside the ring, Fundora believes they share a similar thirst for action inside the ring.
“This is going to be a crazy night,” Fundora said. “It’s a huge fight between two guys who like to throw punches. Expect fireworks. I think this fight sells itself. Thurman is the one who talks a lot, and I’m the quiet one, but we both like to throw down. It’s going to be a great night of boxing.
“We’re going for the knockout, but I need to win no matter what. A win over Thurman will further solidify us as the best in the division.””.
