Thrilled and enthused to be able to be with the boxing family on the traditional “Coffee Tuesdays,” former world champion Rey Martínez opened up to the specialized press and talked about his experience of the positive test he had in his last fight, the learning experience it left him and, of course, the plans he has for the future.
For Rey, it was very painful when they told him that he had tested positive for doping, because in his opinion he had only taken a tea that would help him lose the last few kilos to make the weight, without knowing that it contained a prohibited substance.
He recognized his responsibility, because as an athlete he knows that he should know everything he consumes and avoid trusting people who put at risk not only his health but also his rival’s. At this point, the President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, paused to recognize Rey’s courage, since not many boxers do so and prefer to hide without talking about the subject.
He added that the WBC is committed and working hard to eradicate this type of practices that some unscrupulous people exercise on boxers, without thinking about the terrible risks to which they are exposed.
To conclude, the leader of the organization, urged all boxers to be responsible for their weight and health.
For Rey, this bad experience leaves her with a valuable learning experience; however, today she only wants to look forward and think about what comes next in her career, which is to seek the opportunity of the super flyweight title, since this will allow him to continue growing as a boxer and face new challenges.
Rey Martinez, who shone in the flyweights as a new champion, made 7 successful defenses; however, he is convinced that it is time to move up a division and once again be crowned world champion. “I am very grateful to the WBC and its President, Mauricio Sulaimán, for all the support they have always provided. My colors are and will always be green and gold, and as I have always said, I am here with everything except fear.”
