The iconic boxing leader, Don José Sulaimán Chagnón, was recognized for his outstanding career and for being a distinguished native of Tamaulipas, with multiple qualities that have immortalized him.
His sons, Pepe and Mauricio Sulaimán, were responsible for receiving the posthumous award during an emotional tribute honoring their father.
“Every time my father visited Tamaulipas, he met with his friends, with his people. Here they called him ‘Pepe,’ and here he truly felt at home. Every visit was filled with blissful memories: my mother, my grandmother, the noon coffee, masa con puerco(pork with corn dough)… all those elements that cemented our identity,” commented Mauricio Sulaimán.
The WBC President extended his gratitude on behalf of his brothers, sisters, and Don José’s fourteen grandchildren, who passed away almost twelve years ago.
“Time moves on, and we often undervalue what we possess. Today I want to pause, look you in the eye, and say thank you. Thank you for keeping my father’s memory alive and for giving us this moment of shared happiness.”
The recognition took place ahead of the significant boxing event to be held this Saturday in Reynosa, headlined by former champion Miguel “Alacrán” Berchelt facing Venezuela’s Edixon Pérez.
This event is a key component of a state program designed to revitalize sports and strengthen the social fabric through community cohesion.
“We want Reynosa to regain its position as an essential focus of Mexico, especially after complicated periods. Sport is the path for us to reconnect with our values and with community life,” he concluded.
