Hublot and the WBC will once again make history on May 3, 2019, as the greatest stars of the sport will gather at the Encore hotel in Las Vegas, for what promises to be a truly magnificent and memorable Night of Champions Auction and Gala Dinner, including the attendance of Oscar de la Hoya.
The boxing icon was born on February 4, 1973, in Los Angeles, California. His most significant amateur international boxing feat took place at the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992 where he handily won the gold medal, earning himself the nickname “Golden Boy.”
Then, Oscar made his pro debut on November 23, 1992, defeating Lamar Williams by KO. With an unbeaten career, his dream opportunity of contesting for the WBC super lightweight title, against the legendary Julio César Chávez, arrived in 1996. “Golden Boy” who was nearing his peak, cut Julio over the left eye and in the fourth round, Referee Joe Cortez determined that Chávez could not continue the fight, which was stopped at two minutes and thirty seven seconds. Oscar was champion!
After his first defense, Oscar decided to try his luck and chance his arm in the welterweight division, fighting the sublimely skilled southpaw Pernell Whitaker for the world title. The fight took place on April 12, 1997 in Las Vegas, Nevada. De la Hoya who fought superbly was crowned. He then won the world title in the super welterweight division, dethroning the rugged Spanish champion Javier Castillejo.
Such were Oscar`s skills, power and brilliance, that he became world champion in six different divisions: Super feather/ Light / Superlight / Welter / Superwelter / Middle.
