May 21st, 1966.- Puerto Rican, Jose Torres, defended the WBC light heavyweight championship, by defeating American Wayne Thornton via decison after fifteen rounds. The bout took place at the Shea Stadium in New York. Thornton was knocked down twice in the first round, but toughed it out, lasting until the final bell. The Referee was Johnny LoBianco. The Judges were Artie Aidala and Al Berl. It was the first defense of the crown Torres had conquered by defeating Willie Pastrano via TKO in 9 rounds.
