On this day in history, Mayorga chops down Forrest to unify welterweight division
January 25, 2003
Ricardo Mayorga secured a major upset when he knocked out WBC welterweight champion Vernon Forrest to unify the division.
Forrest headed into the clash as a heavy favorite with a 35-0 record and recent back-to-back wins over pound-for-pound king Shane Mosley.
However, Nicaraguan brawler Mayorga, who gave away height and reach, dropped the American twice before he was saved from further punishment in the third round by referee Marty Denkin.
