World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, who has been at the hub and epicenter of the World Boxing Council’s first Convention in Germany, is delighted that words have been put into action, forming feasible strategy and viable work programs.
At the Grand Elysee Hotel in Hamburg, he said: “It is hard to put into words, but easy to feel it. There is a robust plan of action for 2025.
“This a new era for German Boxing. The past was huge, with Max Schmeling, the Klitschko Brothers and there are so many great champions that this country has produced. Now it’s time to see the new era of Germany.”
During the final session of the Convention, which examined and delved into finance, funds and retirement provision for boxers, All Time Great Alfonso Zamora candidly admitted that he had squandered a fortune on wine, women and song.
Mauricio praised the forthright fortitude it took for Alfonso to stand up and bare his soul in public for the public, so we can all share in a lesson learned the hard way.
He stressed: “It takes real courage to admit that all the money he earned through blood, sweat and tears in the ring went out in women, alcohol and drugs.”
And what of the moments to cherish? “The wonderful memories include Roger Waters giving a message to the WBC, and the great Klaus Meine from Scorpions, Wladimir Klitschko, Lennox Lewis, Terence Crawford, Skye Nicolson. So many women champions, so many young prospects, so many legendary champions. It’s been just amazing.
What makes this Convention so special to me, is the family atmosphere. Love, respect and unity which exits between everyone even with the many language, cultural aspects and age.
“Everything is so diverse, but at the same time, we talk one language, which is…Boxing and love.”
