Julio César “Rey” Martínez used his already famed power punching to retain the flyweight championship of the World Boxing Council against game fellow Mexican Joel Córdova, whom he stopped in the sixth round.
Presented by Matchroom Boxing, Clase y Talento and Canelo Promotions, in the city of Guadalajara, the champion (18-1, 14 KOs) didn’t have it all his own way, but defeated Córdova (12 -5-2, 3 KOs) with a couple of stunners.
Martínez looked calm in the first round and knew how to control Córdova in fierce exchanges, which he got the better of. The pattern was set.
Two heavy left hooks ended it in the sixth. JC`s previously fractured right which has healed well, also served him well.
