Marc Fucarile who suffered life changing injuries in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing , has just taken part in the WBC “Souper Bowl Caring Event,” which helped raise money for widespread hunger globally. It took place at the Central Church, Las Vegas.
He has been speaking to us about his courageous fight back from a multitude of injuries and his work as an inspirational speaker encouraging people who have lost limbs, to look to the future and its potential.
Marc was critically injured by the second of two homemade pressure cooker bomb which were planted and detonated by the brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerian Tsarnaev near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15th 2013. It killed three people and injured hundreds, including seventeen who lost limbs.
The terrorist outrage changed Marc`s life forever. His right leg was blown off. He suffered severe injuries to his left leg, shrapnel wounds including splinters which lodged in his heart and a traumatic head wound. He spent a year in hospital and has undergone a series of operations. He was the last person injured during the attacks to be released from hospital. He praises the staff at the Walter Reid Military Hospital who were caring, professional and persisted to help him in every way possible. He also dedicates his ongoing recovery to his wife Niki and his son Gavin who is now sixteen.
Marc has just met actor Mark Walhberg who starred in the 2016 film Patriots Day which told the story about that fateful day in the most accurate terms possible adhering faithfully to the facts. Marc said: “I told him that he had done a great job in portraying what happened. It was very close to the facts and excellent. Mark himself remembers the plume of smoke the screaming of those injured, the carnage and that his right leg was blown off his body. He had been running to support a friend.
Marc determined to rebuild his life and stresses that it was impossible to change what had happened but feasible to change his future, taking command of it and adapting. He has forgiven the appalling nature of what the brothers did but feel that their imprisonment is just.
Marc has since taken part in eight marathons in a specially adapted cycle using his hands. He has done the Boston marathon three times, the New York Marathon twice, the LA and Detroit marathons once each and the Marine Corps marathon.
He describes persisting as one hundred percent his philosophy and applauds all of the people who have helped him on this long and extraordinary journey which has been a triumph of will. Many people have knitted and sent him blankets and scarfs for which he sincerely thanks them.
He gives motivational talks to those who have lost limbs, mobility impared people and he has created his own platform on the Internet. It is entitled: Marc@Marcnetwork.world
Marc says: “You have to fight and I decided to fight.”
